Explore the ATL
Georgia’s vibrant capital city is no sleepy Southern belle.
In the center of the Southeast, at the base of the Piedmont Plateau’s foothills, Atlanta, Ga., pulsates with an unmistakably cosmopolitan vibe. Whether you call it Hotlanta or the ATL (the code for the city’s bustling airport), this hub of international travel and headquarters of global business heavyweights is home to a wealth of sophisticated cultural, historic, entertainment and recreational offerings.

Heart of the Arts

The core of Atlanta’s vibrant cultural scene is in the lively midtown district, where the Woodruff Arts Center campus features world-class visual art, music and theater. The center’s linchpin is the 312,000-square-foot High Museum of Art, where – in addition to American and European art from the 19th century to the present – works from the Louvre Museum in Paris will be on exhibit through 2009.

Woodruff Center is also home to the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the 14th Street Playhouse.

History Comes Alive

History buffs will enjoy the numerous museums and historic sites commemorating the city’s significant role in shaping the country.

A vast collection of Civil War memorabilia is on display at the Atlanta Cyclorama, a 100-year-old theater-in-the-round detailing the Battle of Atlanta.

The Sweet Auburn Historic District marks the cradle of African-American business enterprise in the city, and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and King Center pay homage to Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement.

Ring It Up

If shopping ’til you drop is your idea of entertainment, you’ll find ample opportunity in places like the touristy, below-street market Underground Atlanta, the upscale Buckhead area and the huge Perimeter Mall. Clusters of one-of-a-kind boutiques and eateries also populate districts all over the metro.

And with 8,000-plus restaurants to choose from, hungry shoppers and foodies alike can nosh, sample and savor anything from Southern barbecue to exotic international cuisine and the finest in fine dining.

Fun for the Family

Take the kids along to visit the World of Coca-Cola, the $220 million Georgia Aquarium, Inside CNN Studio Tour, Zoo Atlanta and Six Flags Over Georgia. Another fun stop is the Kangaroo Conservation Center, home to the largest population of kangaroos outside of Australia.

Baseball fans young and old will want to tour Turner Field and the Braves Museum and Hall of Fame, and football fans can take in an Atlanta Falcons game at the Georgia Dome.

For folks who prefer active participation, Atlanta offers 71 public, 14 semi-private and 48 private golf courses.

If a back-to-nature escape is more your speed, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is a great place to hike, fish, swim, canoe or kayak. The river is stocked with 23 species of trout, and the recreation area features 50 miles of hiking trails along with canoe, kayak and raft rentals.end of article
