The Next Napa Valley?
NC Wine

Move over, California. North Carolina is an up-and-coming wine destination with a wealth of wineries – more than 60 at last count. There’s a wine there to please every palate, from Chardonnay to the native Muscadine, and the wineries are just as varied. You’ll find all kinds – small, family-owned operations on up to the opulent, 35,000-square-foot Childress Vineyards winery. Check out the interactive map of North Carolina wineries or download brochures highlighting wine trails and wine regions of the state at www.visitnc.com. Click on “What To Do,” then on “Food & Wine” and “NC Wine.”

Vacation With a Purpose

It’s a growing trend among people seeking to give back: Travelers are using their vacations to do volunteer work, whether it’s assisting at a children’s clinic in Romania or weed-cutting in Hawaii. Online travel agency CheapTickets.com and United Way of America have launched a Web site to support consumers who want to book volunteer vacations. The new site, http://volunteer.cheaptickets.com, allows travelers to search for cause-specific volunteer opportunities. Another great resource is www.voluntourism.org.

Dinosaurs

Dig These Fossils

If you see a 40-foot Tyrannosaurus Rex on the side of Interstate 65 in Cave City, Ky., you’re not hallucinating – you’re nearing Dinosaur World.

This outdoor attraction is filled with more than 100 life-sized dinosaurs along a 1/2-mile walk. One of the most popular park attractions is a fossil dig where children ages 3-12 can sift through sand in search of authentic fossils and choose three to take home. The park is open every day (except Christmas and Thanksgiving) from 8:30 a.m. to sunset Central time. Dinosaur World sites can also be found in Glen Rose, Texas, and Plant City, Fla. Visit www.dinoworld.net for details.

Fall for Foliage

Ah, fall. Time to bid goodbye to green and welcome crisp mornings and the fiery hues of autumn. What better way to welcome this colorful season than to plan a weekend trip (or longer) around the changing foliage? Each region’s peak season varies a bit, but most states offer weekly foliage reports and driving-tour routes on their tourism Web sites. Hotels and bed-and-breakfast inns are often booked months in advance during foliage season, so be sure to call ahead. The U.S. Forest Service Web site provides links to fall foliage hotspots.
