Places To Go and Info To Know
Stop and Smell the Roses
Tyler, Texas, near Dallas, is known as Rose Capital

Tyler, Texas, located near Dallas, is known as the Rose Capital of the Nation. That’s because the rose industry pumps an estimated $12 million into the local economy each year.

But the real reason to head to Tyler is for the annual Rose Festival, held in mid-October, which includes four days of art shows, floral displays and special events, all honoring the rose. You’ll also want to
stop at the Tyler Rose Garden, which is the largest municipal rose garden in the country, with more
than 500 varieties and about 38,000 plants.

This Run’s For You

If you have a need for speed, check out Granite Peak ski area in Wausau, Wis. Located in Rib Mountain State Park, Granite Peak is a popular place for those who live in Wisconsin, Upper Michigan and Minnesota.

The 700-foot mountain offers 74 runs for every ability level, from wide-open beginner runs to milelong intermediate cruising runs and moguls.

Granite Peak is open from mid-November through mid-April. For more information about the ski area, visit www.skigranitepeak.com.

American Museum of Natural History’s popular sleepover program, Blue Whale

Things That Go Bump in the Night

Imagine curling up in your sleeping bag underneath a 94-foot-long blue whale. That’s what’s in store for families and groups with children ages 8 to 12 who take part in the American Museum of Natural History’s popular sleepover program.

A Night at the Museum gives kids a chance to explore the New York museum’s many interesting exhibits, including a 65-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex, the Hall of North American Mammals and the Hayden Planetarium. Dates sell out fast, so reserve your space at www.amnh.org/kids/sleepovers. Cost is $70 for members/$79 for nonmembers, and a late-night snack and breakfast are included.

Sleeping Inn

bed-and-breakfast

From Washington to New York – in every state and almost every town – you’re likely to find a charming bed-and-breakfast. B&Bs provide a taste of home that can’t be found in your average hotel. In addition, visitors are often treated to a hot breakfast (and sometimes afternoon tea or wine and hors d’oeuvres) and can enjoy greeting and meeting other guests.
